How to Use Garlic for Protecting Your Eye Health?
Many people nowadays suffer from age-related macular degeneration. This condition most commonly affects Caucasian women who are over the age of 50.
Even though aging is one of the major causes of vision loss, there are other factors that can reduce or increase your risk of developing macular degeneration. One of the most effective ways to prevent an occurrence of this condition and to protect your eyesight is to add garlic to your diet.
The garlic contains many beneficial compounds that can provide you with good vision. Here is how the garlic can protect you against macular degeneration.
Garlic Reduces Your Blood Pressure
The blood pressure plays a great role in developing age-related macular degeneration. Restricted blood flow, which is caused by high blood pressure, has a serious impact on the activity of the retina.
The retina requires a high supply of oxygen, and when there is an insufficient blood supply that delivers oxygen, there is a greater chance to damage your eyesight.
According to two studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, the garlic is extremely helpful in lowering the systolic blood pressure and, therefore, in protecting your eye health.
Garlic Reduces Your Levels of Cholesterol
According to a study, conducted by the Harvard Medical School, reducing the levels of blood cholesterol may lower the chances of developing age-related macular degeneration. In this condition, there is a buildup of fat deposits under the retina, which is responsible for causing blurring or blindness in the center of the field of vision.
The study monitored 23 age-related macular degeneration patients who were given high doses of Lipitor, a medication for reducing the levels of cholesterol. In 10 of the patients, the deposits of fat under the retina disappeared, and they experienced a significant improvement in their vision.
The Annals of Internal Medicine states that the consumption of only half a clove of garlic a day is more effective in lowering the cholesterol levels than Lipitor or Statins because the usage of these drugs can cause numerous side effects.
The garlic is beneficial for protecting against macular degeneration because it contains compounds that prevent cholesterol synthesis.
How to Consume Garlic?
Apart from improving your eyesight, the consumption of garlic will enhance your overall health. Press two cloves of fresh garlic by using a garlic presser.
The pressing will enable the garlic to release more of its active ingredients and to maximize its effects. Take a tablespoon of the pressed garlic and swallow it with water.
As you sleep, the garlic will travel through your digestive tract, and it will neutralize all the harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, carcinogens, and toxins before they can damage your healthy cells. By eating pressed garlic regularly, you will be protected against numerous diseases, including age-related macular degeneration.
