Clean Your Tongue and Avoid the Bad Breath
You can brush twice a day or include an extra brush after your lunch, but until you learn that you need to clean your tongue as well, you will not be able to get rid of the bad breath or the lingering halitosis. Each time you go and reach for your toothpaste, you must get into these following oral health habits.
Clean Your Tongue
- Techniques for brushing your tongue – after you give your teeth a good brush, make sure you transfer your focus to your tongue. It is quite simple to do so – just use the bristles on your toothbrush. You can also try using a specialized toothbrush with a built-in tongue cleaner on the back of the head. This is all because the tongue harbors bacteria and particles from the food trapped under a very thin layer of mucus. Make sure you remove this buildup that causes odor by using a small dab of toothpaste and carefully brushing the top of your tongue. Start with reaching to the back of your tongue, and then work forward towards the opening of your oral cavity. Brush the entire top surface using a gentle pressure on the tongue and finish by rinsing your mouth with water.
- Use a tongue scraper – if you want to have a more thorough cleaning of the tongue, try using a tongue scraper. This is a tool which is usually made out of soft and flexible plastic and it gently peels off the thin mucus based layer of debris from your tongue. Just rinse the scraper under some warm water each time you finish the swipe of the tongue. If your tongue starts feeling sore or starts to bleed it means you’ve been using the tongue scraper with to much force. Make sure you work slowly and with light pressure. Concentrate on the center of the tongue where usually the bulk of the bacteria which causes odor lies.
- How often do you have to clean your tongue – every time you brush and floss your teeth, finish your dental care routine with a gentle tongue cleaning. At a minimum, you need to implement this routine two times in a day – once in the morning, right after you wake up, and once in the evening, right before you go to bed. If you happen to develop a dry mouth or notice a foul taste inside your mouth in the middle of the day, try cleaning your tongue in order to take care of this situation. Right after cleaning your tongue, a mouthwash is used in order to moisturize the mouth and kill all the other additional bacteria.
Just remember, maintaining a fresh breath goes a long way from the simple routine brushing of your teeth. By getting into the habit of giving your tongue some adequate attention you will maintain the neutral and fresh breath!
