The feeling of fear, panic, worry and dread – anxiety, is of course, nothing new to us. It was written about it in the fourth century BC by Hippocrates. Also, in 1860s by Soren Kierkegaard.

And again in 1926 by Sigmund Freud. If we jump to the present, we can see a significant increase in this disorder amongst people.

Reduces the Anxiety

The classic treatment for this kind of a disorder (anxiety) seem to be the pharmaceutical drugs, and they seem to be the biggest money maker too. Also, another common approach is the cognitive therapy.

Those who turn to a more holistic approach try yoga, massage, meditaion and other and many other relaxation techniques. Furthermore, the music therapy has proven to have some success in these cases too.

But now, the neuroscientists in the UK put it all down to one song that results in drastic 65 percent reduction of the anxiety with people.

A survery conveyed 2013 showed that 57 percent of the female American students have reported to have anxiety episodes, whereas in the United Kingdom, a third of all the young women and one in every ten men suffer from panic attacks.

The CEO of the charity Sane, Marjorie Wallace believes that the people born in the 1980s and 1990s (the generation Y) are born in the age of desperation. She claims that even though growing up had always been a challenge, being in despair is a completely new feeling.

Next, Rachel Dove wrote in the magazine Anxiety that the anger held within our generation comes from overly protective parenting, rise of technology and harder school system. Another choice that she mentiones, which was brought up to her by the people she worked with, is the luxury of having too much choice.

Furthermore, a psychologist from London, Pieter Kruger, claims that people who feel like they don’t have a choice are often those who blame others if they happen to make the wrong choice. But, it all comes down to whether you have several choices or not, the blame is all on you. Here is where people become obsessive, just because they want to make the right decision.

The 26 year old writer Claire Eastham, also agrees. She had spent a lot of time worrying about where is she taking her life. Previous generations had that choice taken from them. Thinking that if you’re told what to do might relieve the pressure maybe a bit easier on you.

Unfortunately, in the modern era we live in, triggering a paralysis may come from making a decision. Often we research the options we have, for an example, a pair of shoes. Eventually, too much information will flood the brain, resulting in total shut down and creating a feeling of guilt and exhaust of why did we spend so much time on such a trivial task.

What also contributes to the anxiety is the technology. A lot of people are rarely without their phones because they feel exposed without them. It seems that those gadgets we use every day seem to be a window to the outside world and create a sense of connectedness to a lot of people.

Of course, there’s a dark side to all of this. It’s the FOMO, or Fear Of Missing Out. This is constant and very real addiction that can affect not only the anxiety, but the general sense of wellbeing.

The social media gives us space to compare everything from dieting plans, to work, to relationships, to friends, living standards, wealth, beauty and so on, and not just among our friends, but with celebrities too. And of course, time on social media shows how depression can be created – by comparing yourself with others. Despite all of this, neuroscientists found a way how to reduce the feeling of anxiety with a simple song.

And thus, the ultimate anti stress music was created.

Researchers from the UK, in the Mindlab International wanted to see what kind of music can reduce the stress we cause ourselves. The study made the participants solve a couple of puzzles, triggering a sense of stress, while they were connected to sensors.

At the exact same time, the participants of the study listened to a wide range of songs as the researchers followed their blood pressure, heart rate, brain activity and rate of breathing.

They found out that particularly one song lowered thir levels of stress and anxiety for whooping 65 percent! With all participants involved! Interestingly, this song was created for the purpose to raise the state of relaxation.

It was created with the help of sound therapists who arranged harmonies, bass lines and rhythms carefully, which could lower the stress hormones, heart rate and blood pressure with the listener.
